SOPHEA'S STORY

Sophea, a 17-year-old girl from Cambodia, left her home to work as a domestic worker in Malaysia. She believed it would be an opportunity to support her family and build a better future. But she quickly realized she had made a dreadful mistake. Forced to work every waking hour without pay, given only rotten food, and never allowed to leave the apartment, Sophea found herself enslaved.

Months later, she managed to escape, but with no passport, no money, and no understanding of the local language, she had no way home. She lived alone on the streets—hungry, terrified, and vulnerable—until she fell into the hands of a street gang that repeatedly abused her.

Eventually, the police found Sophea and threw her into prison as an illegal immigrant. While in jail, she gave birth to a daughter, a stark and painful reminder of the violence she had endured.

But there was hope. After giving birth, Sophea was returned to Cambodia and taken in by Hagar. Here, she received trauma-informed counseling, allowing her to begin the long, slow process of healing. She was placed in a loving foster home, where she learned to care for her daughter and started to rebuild her life. Hagar helped her find employment with a compassionate employer who understood her past and supported her future.
